The Real People emerged from the vibrant London punk scene in 1978. The band's original lineup consisted of vocalist Tony Marlow, guitarist Steve Kent, bassist Paul Bedford, and drummer Davey Payne. Despite their raw talent, their early years were marked by financial struggles and lineup changes.
Breakthrough and the Infamous "Feel the Pain" (1984-1986)
In 1984, The Real People released their debut album, "Feel the Pain." The title track, a haunting and introspective ballad, resonated deeply with audiences. It became an international hit, propelling the band to mainstream success. However, the song's raw and emotional lyrics also sparked controversy, with critics accusing the band of glorifying violence.
Legal Battles and Lineup Changes (1987-1991)
The controversy surrounding "Feel the Pain" led to legal battles and further lineup changes. Marlow and Kent parted ways with the band in 1987, with Bedford and Payne continuing as a duo. They released a second album, "New World," in 1991, but it failed to match the success of their debut.
Reunion and Later Years (1992-Present)
In 1992, The Real People reunited with Marlow and Kent for a brief tour. They continued to perform sporadically in the years that followed, despite further lineup changes. In 2020, the band released their first new material in decades, an EP titled "Still Feel the Pain."
